Description
The proposed session seeks to refine IUCN guidelines to better address conflict zones and indigenous governance in World Heritage and protected areas management. Previous IUCN publications encompassed ideas such as protected areas categories for indigenous peoples (e.g., ICCAs) or models of collaborative governance (e.g., co-management). Continuing discussions from WCC 2016 in Honolulu, the session will draw upon the experiences of CSOs, INGOs, government representatives, and scholars associated with conflict zones to identify the issues in existing IUCN guidelines and make recommendations to better address the challenges of conflict zones for indigenous governance in World Heritage and protected areas management.
