The side event "'Water, Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law'" is organized by the Geneva Water Hub, the Permanent Missions to the United Nations of Togo and Burkina Faso as well as the les Missions permanentes du Togo et du Burkina Faso as well as the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie. It will take place during the 43rd Session of the Human Rights Council and will approach the right to access to drinking water and sanitation under international human rights law and international humanitarian law and to present the "Geneva List of Principles on the Protection of Water Infrastructure".
The following issues will be addressed:
- How is access to safe drinking water and sanitation protected under international human rights law?
- What has been the evolvement, in practical terms, of the engagements of both the United Nations General Assembly and the Human Rights Council in this field?
- How is access to safe drinking water and sanitation protected under international humanitarian law?
- What is the content of the Geneva List of Principles on the Protection of Water Infrastructure?
This side event will highlight the importance of respecting the rights to water and sanitation during armed conflicts. It will allow an exchange of views between the African Group in the Human Rights Council, other State delegations and UN actors.
