Young people constitute the largest demographic sector in many countries affected by conflicts related to competition over natural resources and the negative impacts of climate change. Climate action, on the other hand, can also serve as a context for environmental cooperation and peacebuilding. Ensuring that these opportunities are both effective and inclusive requires the meaningful participation of youth together with other relevant partners. Yet, young women’s and men’s increasingly active role in environmental action, and the ways in which climate change uniquely impacts the security and development prospects of youth, remain as of yet understudied.
Drawing on fieldwork carried out in several countries of Africa and Latin America, this presentation highlights the opportunities and challenges faced by youth-led organizations in their efforts to promote environmental peacebuilding and support local and global peace and security. The session is sponsored by the EnPAx Young Professionals Interest Group.
