Underrepresented in the peace process, Afghan women are concerned about potential outcomes and implications of a possible U.S. withdrawal. The 2019 Survey of the Afghan People—based on face-to-face interviews conducted in July-August 2019 with a nationally representative sample of 17,812 citizens across all 34 Afghan provinces—provides important insights on the status of women in Afghanistan and examines women’s and men’s differing opinions on the role of women in society, security, the economy, corruption, reconciliation with the Taliban, access to media, and political participation in Afghanistan. The Asia Foundation’s annual survey provides an unmatched barometer of Afghan public opinion over time, allowing for analysis of gender issues and changing trends in public perceptions. Please join Dr. Tabasum Akseer, director of policy and research at The Asia Foundation in Afghanistan in conversation with senior director of the Women’s Empowerment program, Jane Sloane for a discussion on the status of women in Afghanistan.
