Gender equality is emerging as an important theme for many stakeholders involved in the mining sector, including those working to fulfill the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), from governments to donors to communities and civil society. There is growing recognition that not only does the mining sector have different impacts on men and women, but that policy and governance responses to the sector also affect women and men differently.
Women are often adversely impacted by mining, with problems arising within families and communities related to the lack of women’s decision-making and influence on the use of water and land critical for their livelihoods and the care of their families. In addition to their influence over land and water resources, it is also noted that women’s participation in the economy and ability to participate in political and decision making processes are key factors that may decrease harms or influence access to benefits from mining, affecting social, economic and environmental outcomes.
This webinar will look at how governments can strengthen their policy responses to gender impacts and gaps related to mining, to improve development outcomes from the sector. The webinar will share practical approaches to addressing gender gaps in mining. We will draw insights from two case studies from Colombia, in artisanal gold mining, and coal mining, of initiatives that are effective in addressing key gender issues linked to the sector, while highlighting good practices in Colombian public policy related to mining, from a gender perspective.
This webinar will also introduce initial topics from a new training on gender, governance, and mining that is in development, and seek feedback from participants on how the training can be refined and delivered most effectively.
By taking part in the webinar you will gain an understanding of:
- The key gender gaps related to mining
- The ways governments can better address these issues as part of their regulatory and public policy response, from a gender perspective
- How social, economic and environmental outcomes from mining could be shaped by involving women and girls in decision making
- Lessons learned from Colombia’s experience in Artisanal and Small Scale (ASM) gold and coal sectors on improving gender equity in mining
