Beyond Land: Gender Equality in Restoration

As climate advocates increasingly call for nature as the key to healing climate and biodiversity crises, the spotlight on restoration is growing. The recent announcement of a UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, joins previous commitments, which place nature based solution as a key element of solving social and environmental challenges.

With landscape restoration high on the development agenda it is time to consider how to restore more than just the land. Gender-blind restoration efforts are likely to reinforce or even exacerbate pre-existing gender inequalities. Successful restoration relies on the women and men who depend on the landscapes for their livelihoods — and whose rights and wellbeing must be safeguarded and promoted for restoration to be sustainable and just.

This Digital Summit unites researchers, practitioners and advocates working at the nexus of gender and environment to share experiences and strategize about how to ensure an equitable, sustainable and just implementation of the restoration agenda. It will provide a conceptual foundation for addressing gender equality in restoration, with presenters discuss key restoration-related gender dimensions, illustrated through global experiences while identifying new opportunities.
