A talk by Professor Randall Parrish, Professor of Isotope Geology, University of Portsmouth
Gulf War Illness affects hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians involved in the Gulf War of 1991. Possible explanations include psychosomatic conditions, and exposure to depleted uranium (DU) munitions, pesticides, anti-nerve agents, and chemical weapons.
In this presentation, Prof. Parrish reviews the role and environmental legacy of depleted uranium munitions, presents results of several DU testing programmes, assesses soldiers' exposure to DU, and evaluates this in light of other explanations for the illness, with perhaps a surprising conclusion relevant to other more recent conflict situations in the Middle East.
