This webinar with Dr. Nicole Citeroni will delve into the crime of Ecocide. Following recent calls for action by human rights institutions to criminalise and prosecute ecocide, it is more important than ever to shed light on this controversial notion and its potential qualification as the fifth international crime. This lecture will provide a general overview of the context in which the idea of qualifying the most serious crimes against the environment as international crimes has emerged. It will then focus on the legal definitions of ecocide proposed so far and the open questions arising from them, before discussing their potential application to the conflict in Ukraine.

These webinars, which cover subjects including data collection, citizen science, and civic monitoring, aim to explain the legal framework of environmental preservation during times of war.
