The natural environment has long been disregarded as a victim of war. Recently, however, there has been momentum to increase environmental protection in armed conflict, both internationally and domestically. In this webinar, we use the recently adopted UN International Law Commission’s Principles on Protection of the Environment in Armed Conflict (PERAC) as a backdrop to explore the issues created in the cross-sections between climate change, environmental degradation and conflict before, during and after the conflict. In Part I of this series, we are joined by experts including Ambassador Marja Lehto, Special Rapporteur on the topic of Protection of the Environment in Armed Conflict (PERAC), U.N. International Law Commission, to present and discuss the set of principles recently adopted by the U.N.
The webinar will be May 18, 2024 from 9:30 - 11:00 am Eastern Time.
