'The evidence is clear: women’s participation in peacebuilding generates more buy-in from communities and makes peace more durable.' - United Nations Women.

The background to the Women, Peace and Security Agenda:

Following a century of feminist movements, persistent lobbying of civil society, and several UN conferences on the role of women, the UN Security Council finally adopted Resolution 1325 on 'Women, Peace and Security' in 2000. This was celebrated as a landmark in international feminist efforts, in beginning to carve out women’s position in society and their role in politics. Further resolutions have been passed in the last two decades that have been built on Resolution 1325 and its four pillars: participation, prevention, protection, and relief and recovery. This has further shaped the 'Women, Peace and Security' (WPS) Agenda for the 21st Century.
