The Role of Gender in Environmental Peacebuilding

Gender has long been recognised as a crucial dimension of both peacebuilding and natural resource management. Relevant aspects include the (lacking) participation of women, differentiated responsibilities and vulnerabilities, and the construction of cultural norms around male and female identities. However, gender considerations still play a minor role in environmental peacebuilding research, with only a few recent studies explicitly addressing the topic. This is unfortunate given that research on gender and environmental peacebuilding could yield valuable insights for practitioners. The roundtable addresses this shortcoming by discussing the following three questions: (1) What is the current role of gender in environmental peacebuilding research? (2) How can gender considerations improve environmental peacebuilding research and practice? (3) What is the role of gender in successful environmental peacebuilding?
