Important synergies exist between the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda and the Arms Trade Treaty as both share similar and overlapping objectives. Above all, these objectives include the need to prevent conflict and to protect women from conflict’s harm (including gender-based violence) as well as the recognition that women and girls are gravely and uniquely impacted by the use and trade of arms - while they can also be active players in the arms trade.

Acknowledging and reinforcing these synergies has the potential to advance international efforts to strengthen both the WPS agenda as well as international efforts to advance arms export control. Closer coherence and coordination between both the WPS agenda and arms control regimes therefore carries great potential for the promotion of peace.

This panel discussion will explore the interlinkages between the WPS Agenda and the Arms Trade Treaty in order to identify opportunities to strengthen these synergies moving forward.
