Climate Change Effects, Security Risks, and Actions in Africa & Networking Opportunities

The purpose of this virtual, dynamic and interactive event is to provide an informal discussion on climate change effects, security risks, and actions in Africa and to strengthen relationships among attendees. Climate change is increasingly and adversely affecting all continents, but Africa is one of the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Impacts such as flooding, droughts, cyclones, and others in all African regions often undermine state security, ecological security, and human security in sectors including human health, water, food, energy, environment, governance, and economy. Discussing these impacts and respective actions can help people understand associated problems and identify solutions.

Intended Audience

This event is open to the public, free of charge, and designed for African and non-African practitioners, decision makers, researchers, students, or anyone interested in climate change, Africa and networking opportunities.

Event Format


The event entails two core sections:


• The first core section is of the event entails 5 breakout rooms divided into five online breakout rooms categorized by African regions (North, South, Central, West, and East). Each breakout room, led by two facilitators, will have an informal discussion with diverse discussants (experts and non-experts, but all from the countries they represent). These discussants or country representatives will discuss what they now regards to climate change impacts, risks, and actions in their particular African region.

• The second core section on "Networking Opportunities" is a social hour comprising various breakout rooms (tables) in which each one is facilitated by a leading expert on climate change. Attendees, including junior professionals, students, and more senior professionals, will then visit different tables to learn more about the work that leading experts do, how they got into the field, and meet and talk to other professionals. As such, the social hour will serve as a platform for networking, helping people identify potential avenues for collaboration, mentorship, and other opportunities.
