The Endless Conflicts Team is pleased to invite you to an online panel on “Protracted Conflicts, War Economies, and Sustainable Development: Is International Law the Problem or the Solution?” on Tuesday, 5th October, at 2p.m. BST.  Panellists:

  • Dr. Orly Stern (Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford)
  • Emanuela-Chiara Gillard (University of Oxford, Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflicts) 
  • Claire Tixeire (European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights, Berlin)
The panel seeks to bring together academics and practitioners to explore socio-economic dynamics in war economies of protracted conflicts and what role international law can play in containing but also in exacerbating such dynamics. Questions raised include the following: What role can international law play in containing illicit business activities in such situations? Are general doctrines of international law and classical instruments such as economic sanctions and counter-terrorism frameworks part of the problem? How can international law contribute to overcoming the humanitarian-peace-development divide and how can legal regime interactions promote sustainable solutions rather than exacerbate protracted conflicts?
