Momentum for addressing the security dimensions of climate change appears to have reached a tipping point in recent times, as governments and multilateral institutions not only acknowledge the threat but integrate climate risks into their security policy and planning. Recent examples include the Biden administration’s Executive Order on Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad, and the UK Ministry of Defence’s climate change strategy aimed at achieving net-zero emissions in the defence sector by 2050. Meanwhile, climate risk is an important element of the NATO 2030 strategy discussions; the United Nations Security Council and other UN bodies are working to better operationalise climate risk management; and the European Union is integrating climate across its adaptation and security policies.

In this webinar, Michael Rühle, Asako Okai, Hilde Hardeman and Shiloh Fetzek will discuss how governments and multilateral institutions are dealing with the security implications of climate change, as well as what measures can be taken to further accelerate responses to the environmental challenge.
