The roundtable aims to bring together the Government of Korea, Norway, and GGGI to share the experiences, lessons learned, and future plans and explore opportunities for synergies. The event is part of the Campaign for Blue Skies and Net Zero 2020 that seeks to share experiences with the Republic of Korea to support the implementation of its commitment to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050 and its Green New Deal, including through its official development assistance (ODA).
The globe is facing unprecedented wave of environmental issues, from natural disasters, climate change, forest fire and biodiversity extinction, compounded by land degradation and the Global COVID-19 pandemic. These issues compound and accelerate tension, conflict and violence with 81 countries reporting a deterioration in the Global Peace Index since 2008. A great deal of this conflict is due to weak natural resource management governance, scarcity or resources and transboundary dynamics. Global commitments have been made to reduce global deforestation and restore ecosystems, and meeting the aims of the Bonn Challenge aims to restore 150 million hectares of land by 2020 and 350 million hectares by 2030. Also, United Nations has announced Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021~2030 to address above mentioned crisis.
