This conference and policy dialogue will examine ways to improve environmental governance and legality of natural resource management to support peace in Colombia. The conference and policy dialogue will focus on four overarching sets of questions:
- In the context of natural resources and peace in Colombia, what do legality and environmental rule of law mean? How can legal regimes protect both the environment and communities?
- What laws, institutions, and practices are working, and which need to be revised? How?
- What are the priority next steps for managing Colombia’s natural resources to support the transition to peace?
- What has been done in Colombia to use natural capital as an instrument for peacebuilding? What has been achieved, what have we learned, and how can this be leveraged?
Participants will explore these themes through four main tracks:
- Land and forests;
- Extractives (oil, gas, and minerals);
- Climate change; and
- Justice/environmental rule of law.
At the end of the first day (March 18), there will be a poster session and a networking session during which attendees can have a drink and chat informally with others in smaller groups or even bilaterally using the Remo platform. Simultaneous English-Spanish interpretation will be provided for all sessions. The conference organizers are exploring the possibility of publishing a collection of the papers and posters presented at the conference in an edited book. To submit an abstract, please fill out the form in the Submit Abstract tab (at the left).
The deadline for priority submissions was December 31, 2020. The panels are now full. If you are interested in participating in the poster session, please submit an abstract as soon as possible, as the Conference Scientific Committee is reviewing submissions on a rolling basis.
For information on registration and the agenda, please see the corresponding tabs under the conference page, accessible here.
This event is part of the Road to Geneva's Colombia Arc, a series of dialogues on environmental peacebuilding in Colombia. Since launching in August 2020, the Colombia Arc has featured several events, including a set of webinars organized by the Environmental Peacebuilding Association (EnPAx), Duke University Center for International and Global Studies/Rethinking Diplomacy Program (DUCIGS/RDP), the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), and the Environmental Law Institute (ELI).Any questions may be directed to conference@environmentalpeacebuilding.org
