In 2000, the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 1325 – a turning point in understanding and recognising the role of women and girls in peace and security. The UN’s Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda contained principles of prevention, participation, and protection, and highlighted the key role of women and girls in relief and recovery efforts. Their participation is necessary to promote stable economies 

The agenda provides an excellent framework for consideration of the policy responses to Africa’s conflict and security challenges, notably including Covid-19 and pandemics in general. Yet, despite the adoption of Resolution 1325, and the many resolutions that followed, the exposure and vulnerabilities of women in Sub-Saharan Africa, even in non-conflict settings have not been adequately addressed. Women are the worst affected in conflict-stricken countries: they are targets of sexual violence, and their families may be killed or separated, leaving them without support. Covid-19 may have exacerbated gender-based differences for women in conflict and post-conflict settings.   

This Africa in Perspective webinar will examine how to harness better the experiences of women in conflict and post-conflict settings and how to provide security to the many women caught up in conflict. Participants will explore how various stakeholders in sub-Saharan Africa can best support women today and in the decade ahead.
