The growing scramble for critical minerals—spurred in part by the global energy transition—poses an opportunity for resource-rich countries to propel local and national development, especially the Global South, which holds 70 percent of the world’s green energy minerals. By elevating on-the-ground expertise and initiatives from across the world, this roundtable will discuss key lessons and insights to avoid replicating extractive dynamics and ensure a just, sustainable, and secure transition that equally benefits producing countries. The conversation will explore lessons from community leaders and NGOs who are advancing mining models that prioritize community consent, promote institutional and regulatory reform, and allow countries and communities to move up the value chain. Experts and participants will also discuss the role of financing and data sovereignty.
