Environmental reviews are critical to ensuring that interventions do not lead to unacceptable harm to the environment or individuals. For environmental peacebuilding interventions, these reviews are all-the-more important as they provide a critical screening of interventions which can (1) take place under conditions of significant uncertainty and (2) need to anticipate changes in operating conditions which can have a significant negative impact on a project or beneficiaries. Environmental reviews also commonly identify options and avenues for improving project impacts. Humanitarian standards and policy call for environmental reviews of projects and programs during and after conflict. Such reviews are increasingly expected by funding organizations. However, the environmental review process is often seen as lengthy, complex and inhibiting the innovation and quick action often needed in environmental peacebuilding. The reality is that environmental reviews can be completed quickly, sometimes in a matter of days, using purpose-designed approaches and tools. The training will (1) provide a background to the current standards, policy and practice of environmental reviews, (2) identify key approaches to successful and timely reviews, and (3) provide hands-on use of NEAT+, a rapid environmental screening tool commonly used by humanitarian organizations. By the end of the training, participants will (1) understand how the environmental review process works, (2) understand how the process can be used to an advantage in environmental peacekeeping, and (3) gain experience in using the NEAT+ tool. Training materials will be shared with the participants.
