Round Table Abstract Post-conflict transitional justice processes have often not addressed matters environmental harms and damage. Harm towards non-human beings and the ecosystems have for a long time not been acknowledged. The omissions have been facilitated by the anthropocentric approach of the processes and mechanisms, and the gaps in laws and policies. Increasingly, it is becoming acknowledged and identified that the harm and damage to ecosystems and non-human beings is equally devastating, and a source of human rights violations. The International Centre for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) is currently undertaking a study on ‘Transitional Justice and Environmental Harms’ that is: - Highlighting how some societies have addressed matters environment in their transitions. - Assessing the environmental damage in contexts of ongoing or recent conflict, - Making a compelling case for societies that have experienced serious and massive human rights violations to address the environmental harms linked to those violations. - Informing practitioners, policy makers and enriching legal, policy and programmatic initiatives. The roundtable seeks to share the research findings. It will share the legal, policy and programmatic recommendation’s and engage in a discussion that will enrich ongoing and future transitional justice processes.
