Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing has been linked to fisheries collapse, forced labour, environmental degradation, increased conflict at sea, piracy and food insecurity. In the past decade, we have seen an innovative technology-driven push towards greater transparency in the oceans, with nations sharing data and resources for lower-cost fisheries transparency and awareness. This increase in visibility can support better management of fisheries, improved labor practices, ecosystem health and can improve coastal food access—albeit comes with risks and unintended consequences. This panel will feature experts on fisheries technology and law enforcement (Kate Anania, University of Ottawa, kanan086@uottawa.ca), global fisheries conflict (Dr. Sarah Glaser, Sarah.Glaser@wwfus.org), and changing work at sea (Dr. Melissa Marschke, University of Ottawa, melissa.marschke@uottawa.ca).
