Context
The DRC plays a key role in global ecological balances. The DRC plays a key role in global ecological balances. Ranked among the 5 countries in the world most vulnerable to climate change (ND-GAIN Index), it benefits from one of the richest biodiversity on the planet and has 52 protected areas (PAs) covering 13.8% of the surface of the country. It shelters, in terms of area, the second tropical forest massif which constitutes an exceptional carbon reservoir (storage of up to 2,000 tonnes of carbon per ha).
But these forests are subject to multiple stresses that compromise their biodiversity and the ecosystem services they provide. Deforestation has indeed increased sharply in recent years, one of the main factors of deforestation being slash and burn agriculture.
The province of Sankuru is a forest, agricultural and mining (diamond and coltan) province. It plays a fundamental regulatory role for the ecosystems of the Congo Basin. The total forest carbon value of the Province of Sankuru is estimated at 2.9 Gigatons of Carbon in 9.3 Mha of forests (about 7.5% of the DRC's total national carbon).
Located in the center of the DRC, the province is one of the most isolated areas of the country.
The general objective of the “Rubber Agro-forest” project is to contribute to the maintenance of forest cover and the protection and restoration of the biodiversity of the equatorial forests of the Congo, sources of income, food and ecosystem services for local and global populations.
